I’m Tawny, author of Dry Humping: A Guide to Dating, Relating, and Hooking Up Without the Booze, co-host of the Recovery Rocks podcast, and co-founder of the vinegar-based botanical beverage, (parentheses)
I recently subscribed to Creem Magazine. I exchanged some digital American dollars for a beautiful hunk of printed paper often known as a magazine. This purchase is one of my many attempts to spend less time on screens and less time *always* working.
My writing career began in music journalism. However, I hesitate to mention that part of my “career” because I was rarely paid for my work. I got so many exposure bucks tho!!!!! I just never found a landlord who accepts media exposure as a form of rent payment. 🙄
Subscribing to Creem is a way for me to reconnect with my music journalism roots. Although I don’t write about music often, I discuss it every Friday on new episodes of the Recovery Rocks podcast.
The new issue of Creem was delivered last night; I dove in immediately. This particular issue has a “no LA/ no NYC" rule. This means they didn’t include any music, writers, or photographers based in LA or NYC, so they could focus on music, writers, and photographers in other parts of the Western world. I fucking love this approach so much. Creativity lives everywhere—not just on the coasts.
Last night Nick and I decided to watch music videos from the artists mentioned in the issue. This is a fun activity that I highly recommend to anyone. It’s great for three reasons: (1) You can learn about new music you probably wouldn’t have heard about otherwise (2) Random searches confuse your algorithm (3) Music is fucking important!
Below are some of our favorite discoveries from last night’s deep dive, followed by my upcoming events in NYC, Boston, and on Zoom.
New Jams
Meth Math - Grimes meets Björk. I love weird electronic music, and this band's name is truly iconic.
Teen Mortgage - If I was a dude, I’d 100% be a member of Teen Mortgage. This video is packed with 90’s nostalgia, humor, and headbanging. (My favorite things!)
Danny Brown - I’m a sucker for cool videos and powerful lyrics. Danny Brown’s “Y.B.P.” checks both boxes in this stop-motion video about growing up Young Black and Poor in Detroit.
Turnstile - Beastie Boys meets Rage Against the Machine with emo skater vibes. I told my friend, Sierra, about this song and she brilliantly described it as '“Jeremy Allen White’s latest photoshoot meets Stranger Things meets Stand By Me.”

Yes! We have Creem too! I think I got my husband a gift subscription? Or he got himself one? Either way, I love the format and the fact that it has dubbed itself “America’s Only Rock ‘n’ Roll Magazine.” We will have to look up the music videos from the issue as you recommend. What a great idea.
