About the Teacher
Hiiiii! I’m Tawny Lara, author of Dry Humping: A Guide to Dating, Relating, and Hooking Up Without the Booze and The Sobriety Deck, co-host of the Recovery Rocks podcast, and co-founder of the NA botanical spirit, (parentheses).
My teaching style is a light-hearted mix of personal experience as a tired, multi-hyphen Millennial with a business degree. Life is heavy AF, so I approach my classes and 1:1’s with humor. I mean, I wrote a book called Dry Humping, y’all!
I’m also a mental health advocate, so I mix real talk about the publishing industry with mental health tips for handling rejection, writer's block, and the emotional toll of pitching your writing to gatekeepers.

About the Classes
Book Proposal 101 (January 30, 7-9EST + April 1, 7-9 EST)
Want to write a nonfiction book but have no idea where to start? This virtual course will help you understand a book proposal and how to actually enjoy writing one.
Whether you're pitching a nonfiction book or a nonfiction card deck, Book Proposal 101: Stop Dreading It and Start Writing It will help you feel empowered by the proposal process rather than overwhelmed. OK, you might still feel overwhelmed, but you can totally do this!
Be Your Own Publicist (February 4th, 7-9EST + April 8th 7-9 EST)
This virtual class helps writers, researchers, artists, and entrepreneurs learn how to promote their work without that cringey OMG-I-hate-self-promotion feeling. Whether you're looking for strategies on promoting an existing piece of work or creating a platform to prove that you're the expert on a subject, Be Your Own Publicist is the class for you.
This Be Your Own Publicist class is more than PR 101; it's a chance to reframe self-promotion as a strategy to promote your hard work and expertise.
Participants will emerge from this seminar with a comprehensive understanding of what exactly a publicist does and some DIY skills so attendees can approach publicity on their own.
Book Proposal Boot Camp (Feb 5th-March 12th 7-9 EST + May 20th-June 24th 7-9 EST)
This 6-week virtual intensive course picks up where the 101 class left off. In a virtual group setting, students meet with me for two hours a week to finally dust off that old Google Doc and get to work. Each week is structured so students can focus on one aspect of a book proposal at a time rather than feeling overwhelmed by the whole thing at once.
Each session ends with a 20-minute Q&A where students can ask about publishing, proposals, finding an agent, preorder campaigns, and book marketing.
Resolution Revamp (Feb 18th, 7-9EST)
This class helps writers revisit 2025 New Year's Resolutions by setting your writing goals up for success in the rest of 2025. You'll identify specific writing/editing/revision goals and learn actionable steps to accomplish them throughout the year. Whether working on something big like a book proposal or trying to find your voice as a writer, Resolution Revamp: Revisit Your 2025 Writing Goals is the course for you.
Create + Pitch Your Own Card Deck (March 19th, 7-9EST)
Card decks are having a moment in publishing right now, ranging from self-help to recipes to dating advice and beyond. Perhaps you've noticed card decks in your local bookstore or gift shop and thought about creating your own but don't know where to start. Or maybe you're looking for a creative way to show your expertise. Create + Pitch Your Own Card Deck is a seminar to help you develop your own card deck concept to enhance your personal brand, business, or create a resource for your community.
XO,
Tawny
